Learning Advocate:
Mrs. Barb Asmuth 
is a graduate of the University of St. Catherine, BA in Education and is currently pursuing her masters from Viterbo University. Ms. Asmuth was a teacher at St. Mary Central High School, as well as a Homebound Educator through the Neenah and Menasha School Systems. Ms. Asmuth is also teaching Health at Xavier High School. She has been at Xavier since 2009.
Learning Specialist:
Mrs. Cindy Winkelman
is a graduate from CSU Los Angeles, BA
English. She holds credentials in Special Education: Learning Disabilities, English, Reading, and is a certified Irlen Screener and P.A.C.E. (Processing And Cognitive Enhancement) & Master The Code licensed provider. Mrs. Winkelman teaches English support courses and Critical Thinking in Science. She has taught in California and Michigan in elementary, junior high, and high school and has served in the Learning Services and English Departments at Xavier High School since 1999. She is the head of the Learning Services Department and a member of the English and Science Departments.
SERVICES OFFERED:
Learning Specialist and Learning Advocate are available throughout the day, before school, and after school during Z period.
Tutoring There is tutoring during the school day and after school in most subjects from the Learning Specialist and Learning Advocate. Class teachers are available during Z: 3-3:30. National Honor Society offers tutoring during Z period (3-3:30) by appointment.
Study Groups Study groups are conducted by the classroom teacher or by the Special Needs Department as needed.
In-class Auxiliary Support The Learning Specialist and Advocate visit and assist in classes where needed.
Testing & Assessment Screening tests and testing for strengths and weaknesses in achievement, and cognitive skills are available. There are several standardized as well as informal tests available for informal evaluation of learning difficulties. Community referrals for further
evaluation are available upon request.
Curriculum Modifications The Learning Specialist and Advocate will confer with an educational team to determine any modifications to assist with the academic success of a student.
Recommended Teaching Strategies After determining the needs and best way to teach a student with learning difficulties, an individualized information sheet can be provided for each of the student’s teachers.
Behavior Modification Plans Support systems can be devised and implemented for targeting desired academic behaviors and fading undesirable ones.
Advocacy The Learning Specialist and Advocate are available as a liaison between regular teachers and students with learning needs.
Support Materials Information that is helpful for understanding learning needs of students is available: pamphlets, books, videos; or can be referred.
Study Tips Condensed information for academic success on a variety of topics is available.
Learning Support Books in audio format, alternate texts, manipulative teaching materials, study and technological aids
Appointments and Screenings:
- Mrs. Winkelman makes appointments after school, during lunch, and can take drop-ins at X period.
- Screenings and assessment is usually scheduled for Fridays after school.
- Screening for attention, the TOVA screening test, is usually on Monday mornings by appointment.
- Meetings with incoming students are scheduled during August.
